Enrolment - Medicals

All pilots are required to pass an aviation medical examination with an Approved Medical Examiner (AME) to ensure they are medically fit to operate and aircraft. The depth and frequency of examination varies with type of licence and age. Your Chosen AME will explain what you need to do to obtain your medical on your first vist. It is important to have the medical done first before paying the ground school fees or applying for your finger prints as you need to be cleared to be fit to fly by the medical examiner

Class 1 This medical standard applies to holders of an Air Transport Pilot Licence, Commercial Pilot Licence (Single Crew),

Class 2 This medical applies to holders of a Student Pilot Licence, Private Pilot Licence, Commercial Pilot (Balloon) Licence and Flight Radio Operator Licence. (AIDS, Eye and possibly and ECG test will be needed)

Class 3 This medical standard applies to holders of an Air Traffic Control Licence or and Flight Service Officers.

If you intend pursuing aviation as a career we strongly advise that you go for a class one medical prior to starting, and avoid the possibility of getting to the end of your training just to find out you don't meed the medical standard.

Duration of Validity of Medical Certificates

Unless otherwise advised by the Authority, a:

Class 1 Medical Certificate is valid for one year. (6 Months if you have passed your 40th Birthday)

Class 2 Medical Certificate is valid for five years, for applicants less than 40 years of age on the day of issue, and in all other cases for two years.

Class 3 Medical Certificate is valid for two years.

We suggest you get the class of medical required for the licence you ultimately aim to hold. This will ensure you don't go all the way through the training process only to be denied a licence on medical grounds.

Above 40 years of age you will be visiting the AME more frequently.
